As Vice President for DEI, I work directly with the Division of DEI here at UA to provide programming and events for students to attend in order to broaden their perspectives. As VP for DEI, I have the privilege of working with a cabinet. The DEI cabinet members serve as advocates for diverse students and fight for equity and inclusion on campus.

Within the University, I serve as chair of the College of Arts and Sciences Diversity Committee and a member of the College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Teaching Fellows.

I serve The University of Alabama and Lucy’s Legacy as a mentor and resident advisor. As a mentor, I aid a first-year student in navigating their first year at the university. As a resident advisor, I act as a resource for the first-year women of color that reside in John England Jr. Hall on the 3rd Floor. I help them with experiences they may have their first year in college.

The Dean of Students office provides support and guidance to UA students and families. Emphasizing inclusivity, advocacy, and student empowerment, the Dean of Students office offers a wide variety of specialized intervention, educational, and supportive services to students, parents, and families.

Marcella Martinez

The main focus of the Hispanic-Latino Association is to unite undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty/staff of Hispanic/Latino ethnic background and those who have interest in Hispanic/Latino culture through activities that invoke cultural, social, educational, and political awareness, while creating a representative voice for the Hispanic/Latino campus community by identifying the issues of students on campus and addressing these needs to administration, so that our students have an inclusive, positive, and engaging experience.

I coordinate programs focused on community-building for first-year Black and Latinx students, women-identifying students, transfer students, and peer educators. In particular, I direct the BRIDGE and Lucy’s Legacy programs. My academic research focus is sense of belonging in Black students at historically White institutions. A three-time Bama graduate, I have a passion for the UA student experience and seek to create opportunities for all students to feel as if they matter at UA.
