John Lewis: The Inspiration & Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Intercultural Diversity Center will show a special interview with John R. Lewis, the late civil rights activist and politician. This interview provides participants with insight into the relationship between Rep. Lewis and Dr. King and how inspiration began with a letter. From the HBO/Kunhardt Film Foundation (KFF) documentary “King in the Wilderness,” participants will follow Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the last years of his life: from the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965 to his assassination in 1968, through personal stories of the people who were around him. Education Abroad will host weekly pop-up advising sessions on studying abroad. The sessions are first-come, first-served walk-ins where students can meet one-on-one with an Education Abroad advisor. The Intercultural Diversity Center honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by offering an interactive program that focuses on his historical contributions. Participants will be offered virtual presentations, conversation starters, and digital exhibitions of Dr. King’s historic march in Washington D.C. and his visit to Seattle, Washington, in November 1961. Guests can experience the stories of his visits through images, words, and videos at their own pace. In addition, guests will have a reflective opportunity to share how Dr. King’s work has impacted their lives. Lunch will be provided to participants. Blackburn Institute Prospective Student Interest Session

Prospective students for the Blackburn 2024 cohort are invited to join students and staff of the Blackburn Institute to learn about the student experience and application process. The event will start with a presentation in the theater from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. followed by mingling and hors d’oeuvres with members in the Great Hall from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Any UA student who has at least one year remaining at the Capstone is eligible to participate. Prospective Blackburn students may self-nominate or be nominated by University faculty or staff and/or Blackburn Society members, advisory board members, fellows or current students. The only information needed is the student’s name and email address. Access the nomination form. The Cinnamon Rolls Not Gender Roles program is for individuals of all identities to come together, eat pastries and discuss topics concerning gender identity and performance in our current culture and climate. This program’s participants will learn about special topics as they pertain to our understanding of gender. This group meets weekly on Mondays. WGRC Showcase: Call for Submissions

Join the Women and Gender Resource Center for a showcase extravaganza featuring artwork by Black creators in the Tuscaloosa community. WGRC invites submissions from Black artists of art with connections to gender, LGBTQIA+ issues, feminism and women’s empowerment. Submit entries at tinyurl.com/UAART24. Submission deadline is Jan. 25.

EveryWoman Book Club

EveryWoman Book Club will read and discuss “Demon Copperhead” by Barbara Kingsolver. It is the story of “a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a singlewide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit and a fierce talent for survival.” The novel is the co-recipient of the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and won the 2023 Women’s Prize for Fiction.
