Juneteenth: Freedom Day Exhibition

In recognition of the Juneteenth holiday, the Intercultural Diversity Center presents the Juneteenth: Freedom Day exhibition. Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. It is also often observed for celebrating African American culture. Originating in Galveston, Texas, Juneteenth has been celebrated annually on June 19th in various parts of the United States since 1865. This exhibition explores its history, key figures, its impact within the United States and the African American community, ways to get involved and more. Invisible Histories LGBTQ+ T-shirt Exhibit

In observance of Pride Month, the Safe Zone Resource Center will offer a T-shirt exhibit featuring the LGBTQIA+ community and activists from the Invisible Histories Project archives. Invisible Histories Project works with individuals, organizations and service providers to locate materials related to LGBTQ history of the Deep South.
This exhibit offers participants an opportunity to see examples of commemorative items that show the style and ethos of the Pride movement in Alabama through the past 30 years. For more information, contact the Safe Zone Resource Center at safezone@ua.edu.
Safe Zone Ally Training Program

The UA Safe Zone Ally Training Program provides a visible network of allies for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) individuals. Safe Zone Allies distribute information regarding sexuality, gender identity, campus and community resources, and methods for reporting harassment and/or discrimination. The Safe Zone Ally Training Program is a two-hour training session that allows participants to develop a working knowledge of appropriate and respectful LGBTQIA+ terminology; recognize the impact that a campus climate has on individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+; and identify areas of personal growth as a member of the UA community. Following the training program, participants are invited to sign up to serve as UA Safe Zone Allies. Registration is required. The UA Department of Art and Art History will present FLOW, two exhibitions in UA’s downtown galleries opening Friday, June 3, and running through July 27.
FLOW at the Paul R. Jones Museum features installations by Kelly Taylor Mitchell and Tony Bingham. These artists share a focus on ritual, labor and the Black experience. Both draw from research to reflect their personal and communal histories that continue to impact and shape our world. In their work, waterways are understood as sources of life, power and healing. Opening reception for them will be June 3 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Paul R. Jones Museum.

FLOW at The University of Alabama Gallery features installations by Michi Meko and Boo Gilder. These artists share stories of human connection to place that reveal resilience and, at times, beauty and humor. Both were born in Alabama and have long histories in the state. In their work, waterways are understood as places of recreation, exploration, contemplation and change. The opening reception for these artists will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in The University of Alabama Gallery.

The Safe Zone Resource Center will host its weekly Safe Zone Hangouts series throughout the month of June. Participants will learn about LGBTQIA+ resources at UA and connect with other LGBTQIA+ individuals on campus. For this event in the series, attendees will be provided with a canvas and painting supplies and will follow along to a painting tutorial as a group. Juneteenth Virtual Cooking Demonstration with Chef Kimberly McNair Brock

In partnership with the Alabama Panhellenic Association, the National Pan-Hellenic Council and The University of Alabama’s Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Intercultural Diversity Center presents a special virtual cooking demonstration in celebration of Juneteenth. This event features Chef Kimberly McNair Brock, owner of Bitty’s Living Kitchen in Birmingham, Alabama. Chef Kimberly, CHHC, AADP, is a certified holistic health coach who not only shares her expertise as a health coach, but also as an educator and chef promoting “Holistic Farmacy.” Chef Kimberly will cook crab fried rice and discuss the history of Juneteenth, the importance of cooking in the African American community and how cooking builds traditions. Variation of the menu for vegetarian and vegan options will be provided. The first 30 registrations will receive an ingredients bag. Registration is required. Saturday in the Park: Beadwork and Textiles

Moundville Archaeological Park continues its Saturday in the Park series led by Catherine Sloan on Beadwork and Textiles. This series will focus on the demonstrations and presentations related to Native Americans, archaeology, natural history, sustainable gardening and more. Saturday in the Park is open to the public and includes a hands-on activity for children. All programs are free with paid park admission. In recognition of Juneteenth, The University of Alabama’s Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will host a series of events to commemorate Juneteenth in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
The first event will be a financial literacy and homebuying seminar. This seminar will give participants the opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge about the homebuying process and offer valuable tools, information and resources about financial literacy.

The University of Alabama’s Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will host a parade that includes a family cookout, games and fun as part of its celebration of Juneteenth. The festive and fun event will be open to all groups and organizations in Tuscaloosa or surrounding counties. The parade will begin at Westlawn Middle School and end at Plum Grove Baptist Church. Juneteenth Virtual Lecture Presentation

The Intercultural Diversity Center and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute will present a virtual lecture presentation about Juneteenth by Charles Woods, III. Woods will address the history of Juneteenth, its impact and ways to celebrate and support Juneteenth. Woods, III, who holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Xavier University of Louisiana, is the education director and trainer for the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. He travels throughout Alabama teaching people of all ages and backgrounds about the lessons learned from the Civil Rights Movement. Registration is required. EveryWoman Book Club: ‘The Sunlit Night’

The current book is “The Sunlit Night” by Rebecca Dinerstein. The book, described as “richly imagined and darkly comic,” is love story set in the Arctic Circle that explores self-discovery and the power of starting over. The book, released in 2016, is now a major motion picture of the romantic comedy-drama genre.

Title IX 50th Birthday
