Saturday in the Park: Hoop Dancing and Native Drums

Moundville Archaeological Park continues its Saturday in the Park series with an event led by Lyndon Alec and Dan Isaac with the Southern Pine Drummers. Saturday in the Park is a series of demonstrations and presentations related to Native Americans, archaeology, natural history, sustainable gardening and more. Saturday in the Park is open to the public and includes a hands-on activity for children. All programs are free with paid park admissions. The Safe Zone Resource Center will host weekly Safe Zone Hangouts during July. For this event in the series, attendees will be provided a canvas and painting supplies and will follow along to a painting tutorial as a group. Participants will learn about LGBTQIA+ resources at UA and connect with other LGBTQIA+ individuals on campus. For more information, contact the Safe Zone Resource Center at safezone@ua.edu.
Safe Zone Resource Center: Ally Training Program

The UA Safe Zone Ally Training Program provides a visible network of allies for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) individuals. Safe Zone Allies distribute information regarding sexuality, gender identity, campus and community resources, and methods for reporting harassment and/or discrimination. The Safe Zone Ally Training Program is a two-hour training session that allows participants to develop a working knowledge of appropriate and respectful LGBTQIA+ terminology; recognize the impact that a campus climate has on individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+; and identify areas of personal growth as a member of the UA community. Following the training program, participants are invited to sign-up to serve as UA Safe Zone Allies. Registration is required. EveryWoman Book Club: ‘Get a Life, Chloe Brown’

“Get a Life, Chloe Brown” is a 2019 romance novel written by Talia Hibbert and published by Avon Romance. The main character is a chronically ill computer geek with a goal, a plan, and a list. After almost dying, she comes up with six directives to help her “Get a Life.” EveryWoman Book Club is open to faculty, staff, community members and graduate students. The UA Department of Art and Art History presents FLOW, two exhibitions in UA’s downtown galleries running through July 27.
FLOW at the Paul R. Jones Museum features installations by Kelly Taylor Mitchell and Tony Bingham. These artists share a focus on ritual, labor and the Black experience. Both draw from research to reflect their personal and communal histories that continue to impact and shape our world. In their work, waterways are understood as sources of life, power and healing.
FLOW at The University of Alabama Gallery features installations by Michi Meko and Boo Gilder. These artists share stories of human connection to place that reveal resilience and, at times, beauty and humor. Both were born in Alabama and have long histories in the state. In their work, waterways are understood as places of recreation, exploration, contemplation and change.
