Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School Library Book Drive

Children’s books can be dropped off at the School of Social Work or purchased from MLK Elementary School’s Amazon wish list. An additional way to serve is to volunteer your time as a “Reading Buddy.” Story time is approximately 30 minutes. You are welcome to sign up as many times as you like. The school is housed at a temporary location: 3834 21st St. Tuscaloosa, AL 35401; 205-759-3619. Remember the name of the teacher you have signed up for and notify the office when you arrive so they know how to direct you. Katherine Baxter is the school librarian and is also available to assist.

YUSEF SALAAM, a member of the Exonerated Five (formerly the Central Park Five)

Salaam was one of five teen boys – black and Latino – from Harlem who were incarcerated for raping a white woman in 1989. Now exonerated, Salaam shares his story, which leads to important questions about race and class, the failings of our criminal justice system, legal protections for vulnerable juveniles, and fundamental human rights.

Campus Presentation: Ferguson Ballroom

Book signing immediately following the lecture. Salaam’s book “Words of a Man: My Right to Be” can be purchased at the University Supply Store.
Students can receive Greek points.
